Prep Basketball BOYS : Moses Hurts Wrist as Alemany Breaks Down Loyola, 83-55

Alemany High School won a decisive but costly 83-55 victory at home Tuesday night over Loyola High, as freshman forward James Moses left the game near the end of the first half with a possible fractured left wrist.

Even with only six players left in uniform, Alemany was more than a match for the Cubs as it extended a 36-23 halftime lead to a 58-35 advantage by the end of the third quarter. The victory left the Eagles 3-1 in the Del Rey League and 13-4 for the season. Loyola fell to 2-3 in the league and 4-10 for the season.

Fernando Lopez, a 6-7 senior forward, led the Eagles with 20 points. He made nine of 16 shots from the field and pulled down six rebounds. Forward David Swanson added 18 points, forward Tom Carlson scored 14 and guard Vince Collet scored 12.

Moses scored 13 points as he was successful on six of 11 shots from the floor. He also grabbed five rebounds before leaving the game with his injured wrist. Dan Mulville led the Cubs with 13 points.

Burbank 74, Alhambra 48

Senior forward David Nielsen dominated the backboards in the second quarter to lead Burbank High School to an easy Foothill League victory at home over Alhambra High.

Nielsen scored 10 of his 19 points off the offensive boards to lead a 21-11 Bulldog spurt in the second quarter. Top scorer for the Bulldogs was senior guard Gary Lotka, with 23 points.

Lotka’s backcourt teammate, junior guard Orlando Cepeda Jr., had seven assists and eight rebounds to go with his nine points. Ed Gerardo, who had 18 points, was the only Alhambra player to score in double figures.

Burbank ran its season record to 10-3 while the Moors fell to 6-8 for the year. It was the first league game for both teams.

Santa Clara 67, Agoura 50 Agoura High fell below the .500 level for the season by dropping a Frontier League game to Santa Clara. Agoura is 7-8 while Santa Clara, one of the state’s better small-school teams, is 15-3. Agoura is 1-1 in the league. Santa Clara is 2-0.

Stacey Cjanovich scored 24 points for the winners with Tim Gama adding 16. Steve Armstrong had 16 for Agoura. Mike Corrodori had 13 and Donnie Ray had 11.

The game was never close as Santa Clara held a 35-27 lead at the half and increased the margin to 20 points with a 20-8 advantage in the third period.
