Two people were injured and 44 others were left homeless when fire swept through a residential hotel on Skid Row, Los Angeles fire officials said Friday.

Archie Henderson, 67, was burned over 50% of his body in the blaze, which erupted on the second floor of the Earl Roy Hotel on 5th Street on Thursday night. Henderson was in critical condition Friday at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, a hospital spokesman said.

Henderson’s daughter, Linda Johnson, 41, was hospitalized in stable condition after inhaling smoke.

The blaze gutted five apartments, damaged five others and displaced 44 tenants, authorities said.

The American Red Cross set up a temporary shelter for the tenants, including some in their 70s. Red Cross spokeswoman Peggy McGinley said that 19 of the victims stayed at the shelter Thursday night and that her agency was trying to find rooms for the others.

Cause of the blaze, which resulted in $110,000 in damage, was under investigation, fire officials said.
