Nogales vs. Wilson

Share

Two of the best centers in the San Gabriel Valley will face each other in this Sierra League basketball showdown at 7:30 tonight at Wilson in Hacienda Heights. Wilson, 15-4 overall and 5-0 in league play, has 6-8 junior Scott Williams and Nogales (16-5, 4-1) has 6-9 senior Bruce Wheatley, who has signed a letter of intent to attend the University of Arizona next season. Williams outscored Wheatley, 21-9, in a 62-58 Wilson victory Jan. 11. The Wildcat center will need a similar outing for Wilson to win the rematch.

Muir vs. Crescenta Valley

With powerful Glendale still rolling along undefeated, this game is looking more and more like a battle for second place in the Pacific League. The game is at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Crescenta Valley. Muir, perhaps the only team with a fair chance of catching Glendale, is 15-4 overall and 4-1 in league play. Crescenta Valley is 14-6 overall and 3-2 in league. When these teams met on Jan. 11, the outcome was much as expected. Harvey Mason of Crescenta Valley was the top scorer with 25 points but the more balanced Muir won, 84-68. Mason, a 6-2 junior guard who average 25.7 points, and senior 6-4 forward Drew Haberl (17 average) figure to do most of the scoring for the Falcons. Muir has a strong front line led by 6-5 forward Tony Akins, who averages 25.2 points.

Temple City vs. South Pasadena

Unheralded South Pasadena has surprised more than one team on the way to a 16-2 record. However, the Tigers will be faced with an especially tall order when they visit Temple City in a Rio Hondo League game at 8 p.m. Friday. Temple City is off to a 5-0 start in league play (14-5 overall) and the biggest force has been 6-11 center Erik Rogers, a heavily recruited senior who is averaging 22.6 points and 10 rebounds a game. Rogers, who poured in 35 in a 76-72 victory over South Pasadena on Jan. 11, has been supported by senior guard Mark Mooney (6-0), who averages 11.2 points.
