Community College Roundup : Cypress Hits a Cold Streak and Cerritos Wins Another, 60-58

Cerritos College ran its win streak to 12 games Wednesday night to finish the first round of South Coast Conference play undefeated by beating Cypress, 60-58, at Cypress.

Cerritos (8-0, 17-3) took a 27-21 halftime lead as Cypress (4-4, 10-8) missed its first 16 field goal attempts and did not score a basket for the first 12:16.

The Falcons extended their lead to as many as 10 points in the second half before Cypress rallied to take the lead with a little more than six minutes to play. But Cerritos, which was down by as many as three, started its comeback to retake the lead for good, 50-48, with 3:32 remaining on a basket by Marlon Wadlington.

The Falcons made 6 of 8 free throw attempts in the final 1:26 to clinch the win.

Guard Joe Yezbak led Cerritos with 18 points, and forward John Berwick had 18 for Cypress, 17 in the second half.

Mt. SAC 48, Fullerton 46--Paul Rollins’ tip-in at the buzzer was not allowed as time ran out and the Mounties held on for the win at Fullerton.

Mt. SAC (7-1, 20-2) was led by Larry Richard’s 17 points. Todd Trueman paced Fullerton (5-3, 11-10) with 14.

Saddleback 81, Compton 65--Sophomore forward Eric Cornly scored a season-high 35 points to lead the Gauchos (4-4) to their fourth staright win. Cornly’s 35 was the most points scored by a Saddleback player in three years.
