Prep Basketball BOYS : Camarillo Players Double Up for Title, 48-47

It was fitting that four players scored in double figures during Camarillo High’s title-clinching 48-47 victory over Royal on Wednesday at Camarillo.

Balanced scoring has been the trademark of the Scorpions, who are 9-1 in the Marmonte League this season.

Junior Forward Mitch Parrott scored 14 points, senior guard Phil Hahn had 12, and seniors Glen Dutro and Steve Banales had 10 each for Camarillo. Guard David Anderson had nine assists.

Camarillo led, 16-8, after one quarter, but Royal refused to allow the Scorpions to steamroll straight to the title. The Highlanders clawed back and trailed by only a point, 46-45, with less than a minute left.

Two free throws by Hahn, however, put the contest on ice.

Forward Mike Barry scored 11 points, center Joe Pugh had 10 and forward Brent Tapia added 9 for Royal. The Highlanders slipped to 3-6 in league and 7-12 overall.

Viewpoint 58, Coast Christian 49

Center Tracey Dole scored 31 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Viewpoint to its first Heritage League victory in 10 tries.

Erik Blaine added 13 points and made five steals for the Patriots, who led throughout to improve their overall record to 3-13.

Brothers Gene and Ron Williams combined for 30 points to keep Coast Christian in the game as late as the third quarter, when they pulled to within three points.

Crescenta Valley 54, Pasadena 50

Junior swingman Harvey Mason led Crescenta Valley High past Pasadena by scoring 32 points.

Mike McGeagh had 12 rebounds and Drew Haberl added six assists for the Falcons, who improved to 5-2 in the Pacific League and 16-6 overall. Pasadena fell to 2-5 and 12-8.

“We outrebounded Pasadena in the second half,” Crescenta Valley Coach John Goffredo said. “That was the difference in the game.”

El Segundo 51, Harvard 50

Harvard High blew a three-point lead in the final minute on its home court to fall to 0-8 in the Pioneer League and 1-19 overall.

A 16-foot bank shot by Divan Alo with five seconds remaining in the game gave the Eagles the victory after they had pulled to within one point on a 10-foot jumper by Robert Beal.

Beal scored 14 points, while Alo and Bill Woodcock each added 10 for the Eagles.

Forward Joel Farkas scored 18 points and David Reiner added 10 for Harvard.

Sylmar 75, Verdugo Hills 52

Dave Donaho led a balanced scoring attack as Sylmar High extended Verdugo Hills’ winless record in the East Valley league to 0-9.

Steve Crawley, who grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds, added 15 points, while Wes Tanijir scored 13 and Chris Davis and John Smith contributed 11 each. Smith also had 10 assists and five steals as the Spartans took a 38-25 halftime lead. It was Sylmar’s second victory in 15 games overall and their second in nine league games.

Terry Bowen led the Dons, who are now 0-12 overall, with 17 points.

Marshall 77, Birmingham 57

Jerry Simon scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Barristers to their sixth victory in nine East Valley League games.

Marshall took a 24-10 lead on their home court after the first quarter and led 36-24 at halftime. They broke it open in the third period with a 24-17 advantage over the Braves, who were led by Dean Stewart’s 12 points and Ron Currie’s 10 points.

San Fernando 61, Monroe 53

John Austin scored 22 points and Frank Ruiz added 10 to lead fast-starting and slow-finishing San Fernando over the Vikings, who dropped to 0-9 in Valley League play.

The Tigers, who are 2-7 in the league and 6-17 overall, took a 20-4 lead after one quarter and a 40-17 advantage at halftime before Monroe made a game of it and outscored San Fernando, 22-10, in the third period to pull to within 11 points.

St. Genevieve 74, P. Noster 52

St. Genevieve High won its third Santa Fe League game by jumping out to a 24-12 first-quarter lead at Pater Noster.

Mo Guardado hit eight of nine free throws en route to 18 points for the Valiants.
