CSUN Men Don’t Swim in Fast Lane

The third day of the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. swimming championships brought good and bad news for Cal State Northridge.

The Lady Matadors extended their lead Friday over Cal Poly SLO to 833-624, but the Northridge men fell further behind Cal State Bakersfield, 583-509.

The championships end today.

Cal State L.A. trails in the women’s competition with 288 points. The Cal Poly SLO men rank third with 314 points. Cal State L.A. has 215.

Several Northridge swimmers qualified for the NCAA Division II Nationals in addition to helping the Matadors pile up points.

Tracey McCluskey captured the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:56.31, while Crista Lawrence won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 59.26. Both times qualified the swimmers for nationals.

Another qualifier was CSUN’s Michele Hampton, who won the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:35.62.

Michelle Barnett, who finished second in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 59.61, also qualified for nationals.

Northridge won the women’s 400-yard medley relay with a time of 4:10.49.

Northridge men dominated one-meter diving competition. Roland King finished first with 469 points, Eric Morris was second with 436.15, and Blair Nogosek was third with 426.15. All three qualified for nationals.
