Serra vs. Crespi

Serra (19-5) will try to use its speed and pressure to rattle Crespi (16-7), which is small but extremely well-coached and versatile.

If Serra’s Mark Sutherlin has another big game, Crespi will be in trouble. The Cavaliers’ burly 6-5 center had 33 points in the playoff opener against Servite.

Crespi has nobody taller than 6-3 and can’t match the Cavs’ speed or depth. Crespi may have the CIF’s best-shooting duo in guards Joe Campanella and Brian Capp, who have the green light. They combined for nearly 60 points in the opening-round playoff victory over Long Beach Jordan. Point guard Alfie Basile, who broke the school assist record, sets them up. Jon Kirchner and junior Steve Tanin do the dirty work inside. They’ll be asked to contain Sutherlin and team scoring leader Keith Malone.

St Bernard vs. Ocean View

St bernard (17-7) played one of its best games against Pius X in its 69-55 playoff opener and presents problems for the slowwer Seahawks (22-3). Ocean view, on the other hand, has the heightand ability to dictate the pace, and a controlled tempo has hurt St. Bernard.

Vikings point guard Reggie Howard runs a strong fast break, wspecially with Errol Talley and David Whitmore on the other end. However, whitmore, the sensational sophomore, had chicken pox over the weekend and is a doubtful starter and guard Theron Gilmore has been battling the flu.

Ocean view is led by guard Blaine DeBrouwer, the only starter shorter than 6-5. Sophomore Ricky butler, 6-6, is second-leading scorer.

7:30 p.m. Friday at Bishop Montgomery. Morningside vs. Ganesha

Morningside, which reached the CIF 4-A semifinals last year, hasn’t fhad problems in the 3-A bracket but should get a game from Ganesha (20-6) in the quarterfinals. The Monarchs (20-4) are led by guards Darrell Gordon and Levord Jenkins and Have the Big man, 6-8 junior Elden Campbell. The Monarchs are without 6-6 forward Leon Gibson, who is being treated for a collapsed lung. Morningside won at the line Tuesday night against La Quinta, hitting 29 of 38 goul shots in a 59-46 victory. Ganesha, which features a balanced, high scoring attack, is led by the English twins, juniors Ronald and Donald, and Eugene Haynes.

7:30 p.m. Friday at Inglewood High. Chadwick vs. L.A. Baptist

Baptist (18-5), which lost three league games, may be in over its head against the Dolphins (22-2), who went undefeated in league and played mostly 3-A and 4-A schools in the preaseason. Coach Tom Maier’s top-seeded Dolphins feature powerful junior James Johnson in the middle, several player who have vast playoff experience-notably point guard Steven Gill and Forward Jon Hall- and at least three excellent players off the bench. Baptist characterized as “too small and too slow,” is led by Eric dickson’s rebounding and the play of point guard Troy Lehman. Nobody on the team is averaging double-figure scoring, and Baptist probaly will try slowdown tactics, as in its recent 29-28 loss to Montclair Prep.
