1-A Girls : Toma Leads La Jolla Country Day
Liz Toma, held without a point in the first half, scored three baskets in a little more than a minute late in the third quarter Wednesday to spark La Jolla Country Day High School to its first San Diego Section 1-A girls basketball championship, 41-34, over defending champion Holtville at the Sports Arena.
La Jolla Country Day finished the season with an 18-0 record.
Toma, who finished with 10 points, broke a 17-17 tie and put the Torres ahead to stay with three 15-foot jumpers that gave LJCD a 23-17 lead 30 seconds before the end of the third quarter.
“Once she settled down, I knew she’d get hot,” La Jolla Country Day Coach Jack Wigley said. “She’s always been a fine shooter. This first championship really feels great.”
Michele Hall added 14 points for the Torres. Rosie Oretega scored 14 to lead Holtville.
