Prep Playoffs GIRLS SMALL SCHOOLS : Oakwood Held to 4 in 2nd Half

Flintridge Sacred Heart High Coach Bill Sanchez made an adjustment at halftime to take Oakwood High’s top two scorers out of the game.

Actually, he took the whole Oakwood offense out of the game.

The No. 1-seeded team in the Small Schools Division allowed Oakwood just four points and one basket with an easy 42-16 win in the second round of the Southern Section Small Schools Girls playoffs Wednesday at Holy Martyrs gym in Encino.

“We wanted to take number 32 (Jaimie Green) and 51 (Colleen Donohew) out of the game. We tightened up on them a lot,” said Sanchez, whose team is now 20-3 for the season and will face Westridge in the next round.

Taking Green out of the game, takes away a lot.

Green had 26 points and 27 rebounds in Oakwood’s opening round win over Buckley last Saturday. She was averaging over 23 rebounds a game this season.

She scored 10 of Oakwood’s 12 points in the first half against Flintridge as the Lady Gorillas stayed close, down only 19-12. But whenever Green got the ball in the second half Wednesday, she turned around and saw three sets of arms in her face.

She had five forced misses in the third period and was barely able to get off a shot in the fourth. The rest of the team wasn’t getting off many other shots.

It was 30-15 at the end of the third period. Rochelle Willner’s basket to start the third quarter was Oakwood’s only basket of the second half. Mara Konrad, Sarah Banales and Sandy Shaw combined for eight straight points before Karen Wexler got Oakwood’s other point of the third period.

In the fourth period, Flintridge’s defense, led by the backcourt Shaw sisters, Debbie and Sandy, had a shutout going until 25 seconds left when Green hit a free throw to make it 40-16.

It’s not the Oakwood players weren’t getting any good shots, they weren’t getting any shots.

Early in the fourth period, Oakwood failed to get a shot off in four straight times down court. Two steals, a 30-second violation and a bad pass gave Flintridge possession.

Flintridge’s Janice Miller ended as the game’s top scorer with 13 points while Konrad added 12. Sarah Banales who dominated the boards, had eight points.

Green finished with 11 points as Oakwood ended the season with a 16-2 mark, losing their first and last games of the season.
