Preps TONIGHT : SOUTHERN SECTION PLAYOFFS : Crespi vs. Serra

El Camino College, 7:30 p.m.

Crespi had an easy time in its 5-A playoff opener last Friday, defeating Long Beach Jordan, 75-55. Brian Capp made 13 of 24 shots and scored 31 points for the Celts, who are 16-7 overall. Guard Joe Campanella added 26 for the Del Rey League champions. Capp leads the team in scoring, averaging 19.6 points a game, while Campanella is second, adding 14.5 points an outing. Serra, seeded third in the playoffs, shared the Camino Real League title with St. Anthony. The Cavaliers, 20-5 overall, are led by Keith Malone (18 points a game) and Mark Sutherlin (17 points a game). Both teams have to ability to hit from the outside. Serra also likes to run and when it does, is tough to beat.

Agoura vs. Temple City

San Marino High School, 7:30 p.m.

Agoura, which tied for second in the Frontier League, has pulled off two straight upsets to reach the quarterfinals of the 2-A Division. In the first round, the Chargers knocked off Suburban League champion Glenn, 55-48. On Wednesday, they stunned fourth-seeded Cabrillo, 54-53, in overtime. Donnie Rea’s two free throws with 18 seconds left provided the margin of difference and improved Agoura’s record to 13-11. Steve Armstrong, who quarterbacked the football team to the Desert-Mountain Conference championship, led Agoura with 22 points against Cabrillo. Temple City, 18-9 overall, qualified for the quarterfinals by defeating Temple City, 63-56.

Montclair Prep vs. Brethren

Brethren High School, 7:30 p.m.

Montclair Prep, the second-seeded team in the 1-A Division, had no problem with Aquinas in the opening round of the playoffs last Friday. The Mounties, behind 21 points by Tim Stallworth, 19 points by Jim Quick and 14 by Todd Bowser, rolled to a 72-51 victory. Bowser, a 6-8 junior, is averaging nearly 22 points and 14 rebounds a game. Montclair Prep, whose overall record is 22-1, won the Alpha League championship. Brethren of Paramount, 15-10 overall, is the third-place representative of the Olympic League. The Warriors routed Bishop, 77-57, to advance to the match with Montclair Prep. The winner plays the victor of the Serrano-Crossroads game in the semifinals on Tuesday.

Whittier Christian vs. Faith Baptist

Faith Baptist High School, 7:30 p.m.

Faith Baptist escaped with a 48-44 overtime win over Twentynine Palms last Friday. Kevin Burton’s four points and two steals in overtime saved the Contenders from a first-round upset in the 1-A playoffs. Coach John Neely’s team is 18-3 overall. Gerald Thomas, a 6-5, 215-pound center, averaged 15 points and 11 rebounds in leading Faith Baptist to the Delphic League championship. In his career, Thomas has more than 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. Against Twentynine Palms, Thomas had 17 points, 8 rebounds and 7 blocked shots. Whittier Christian, the Olympic League champion, rolled over Desert, 79-48, in the first round of the playoffs. The Heralds, seeded fourth, are 19-4 overall. The winner plays in the semifinals Tuesday against the winner of the L.A. Baptist-Chadwick game.

L.A. Baptist vs. Chadwick

Chadwick High School, 7:30 p.m.

L.A. Baptist, the second-place team from the Alpha League, jumped out to a 37-22 halftime lead over Moorpark last week, then coasted to a 58-51 win in the opening round of the 1-A playoffs. The Knights were paced by Dave Kaak (16 points) and Jim Tucker (12 points.) Eric Dickson had 17 rebounds. L.A. Baptist’s reward for beating Moorpark is a date with Chadwick of Palos Verdes, the top-ranked team in the 1-A. The Dolphins, 23-2 overall, tuned up for L.A. Baptist by beating Paraclete, 88-49, last Friday. Chadwick, which lost in the Small Schools final in 1983, was eliminated in the Small Schools semifinals last season by eventual champion Pasadena Poly.
