Prep Baseball : Tustin’s Staton Helps Himself to 9-6 Victory

Tustin High School pitcher David Staton helped his own cause Thursday in the Tillers’ 9-6 win over Capistrano Valley in the second round of the Tustin Tournament.

Staton went 2 for 4, including a 3-run home run, and pitched the first five innings to pick up the victory.

Eric Sherman went 2 for 4 and Mike Morehead went 3 for 4 for the Tillers.

Tustin (2-0) faces Century League rival Foothill in the next round of play.

In other Tustin Tournament action:

Foothill 13, El Modena 6--Nick Gaspar picked up the win for the Knights in relief in second-round play. Kenny Briggs went 4 for 4 with a double and two RBIs and John McTaggart hit a home run and a double for the Knights. Craig Harold homered for the Vanguards.

Rancho Alamitos 8, Los Amigos 4--The Vaqueros easily beat the Lobos in the consolation round.

In the El Segundo Tournament:

Edison 12, Mira Costa 9--Bill Baird got the victory as the Chargers (2-0) got their second first-round tournament win in two days. On Wednesday night, Edison defeated Servite, 6-5, in the opening round of the Loara Tournament.

The Chargers will face Western in the second round of the Loara Tournament today and resume play in the El Segundo Tournament on Saturday.

In the Loara Tournament:

Huntington Beach 7, Katella 0--The Oilers won their first game of the season by easily shutting out the Knights. Ed Lidyoff, Jeff Haacke and Doug Euper combined on a four-hitter for the Oilers. Mark Rasmussen went 3 for 4 with three RBIs on a bases-loaded triple in the sixth inning.

Irvine 11, Sonora 10--Mike Henigan’s two-out double drove in the winning run for the Vaqueros. Bobby Hamelin also hit a grand slam for the Vaqueros.
