Triple Crown Ratings

REMARKS: Of the 10 horses listed in The Times’ first edition of the 1985 Triple Crown ratings, seven are based in Florida, and all seven ran at Gulfstream Park in the last three days.

First, Chief’s Crown, the 2-year-old champion making his first start at three, won the Swale Stakes on Saturday.

A little later, Proud Truth won the Florida Derby by a neck, with Irish Sur second, Do It Again Dan third, and Banner Bob fourth. Favored Stephan’s Odyssey was sixth, more than four lengths behind Proud Truth.

Monday, Script Ohio made his first start as a 3-year-old in a seven-furlong allowance race at Gulfstream and won by 1 1/2 lengths.

Script Ohio was timed in 1:23, three-fifths of a second slower than Chief’s Crown Saturday. “This was a useful prep for the Everglades,” said John Veitch, Script Ohio’s trainer, referring to the 1 1/8-mile stake at Hialeah March 16. Veitch also trains Proud Truth, who is headed for a showdown with Chief’s Crown in the Flamingo Stakes at Hialeah March 30. The Triple Crown races are the Kentucky Derby May 4, the Preakness May 18 and the Belmont Stakes June 8.

Though not listed in the top 10, Rhoman Rule caught the attention of the panel Saturday when he won an allowance for nonwinners of two races by 10 lengths, traveling seven furlongs in 1:22 at Gulfstream.

Trained by Angel Penna Jr., Rhoman Rule is a son of Stop the Music, whose stakes appearances last year included a third in the Laurel Futurity and a fourth in the Young America, which was won by Script Ohio at the Meadowlands.

“He’s a nice horse, and we’ll ride him back in the Budweiser Derby (at Tampa Bay Downs March 16),” said Frank Sanabria, the agent for jockey Jacinto Vasquez, who rode Rhoman Rule. Vasquez, who won the Kentucky Derby with Foolish Pleasure in 1975 and the filly Genuine Risk in ‘80, resumed riding last week after serving a year’s suspension for allegedly offering another jockey a bribe.

“The horse we’d like to get is Banner Bob,” Sanabria said. “He chased that other horse (Mighty Appealing) early in the Florida Derby, and that was a mistake.” Banner Bob has been ridden by Keith Allen.

Mighty Appealing, after a good 2-year-old season in which he was first or second in all his races, has been eighth, eighth and 10th in three starts this year. Some wiseguys at Gulfstream have been going around changing “Get That Mighty Appealing Feeling” bumper stickers to “Get That Mighty Appalling Feeling.”
