Community College Baseball : Santa Ana Walks Away With 10-9 Win Over Mt. San Antonio

The Mt. San Antonio College baseball team gave up three walks and committed an error in the bottom of the ninth inning to help Santa Ana take a 10-9 victory Saturday at Santa Ana.

The Mounties (0-3 in conference) seemed close to winning their first South Coast Conference game of the season, carrying a 9-7 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning. But Santa Ana’s (2-0, 13-2) Don Pat Longo doubled, driving in Brent Rhylick and Mike Lindsten to tie the game, 9-9.

With two out, Mt. San Antonio contributed to its demise, loading the bases by walking Gary Thomason and Vince Shinholster, and allowing Steve Scarsone to reach base on a fielding error.

When Neil Evans drew another base on balls, Thomason walked home with the winning run. Shinholster, who entered the game in relief in the eighth inning, was the winning pitcher.

In other South Coast Conference action:

Saddleback 8, Orange Coast 3--Joe Holden’s homer to lead off the fifth inning proved to be the game’s winning RBI as the Gauchos raised their conference record to 2-1 (8-4 overall). The winning pitcher was John Sinclair (2-0). Saddleback’s Mark Webster, Dante Scott and Albert Camacho had two hits apiece.

Orange Coast was led by Steve Kraiss’ two hits and Fred Tuttle’s sixth-inning homer. Longo Garcia (1-1) pitched seven innings and took the loss for OCC (1-2, 5-5-1).

Cerritos 5, Golden West 0--Falcon pitcher Al Osuna recorded a shutout against the Rustlers, who managed just six hits. The Falcons (3-0, 13-1) scored twice in the fifth inning and three more times in the sixth. Cerritos’ Ever Magallanes was 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Larry Salaets (1-1) pitched five innings, taking the loss for the Rustlers (2-1, 8-2-1). Todd Nash had two hits for Golden West.

Fullerton 8, Cypress 0--Hornet Bobby Hernandez (3-3) pitched a complete game shutout, striking out seven, walking one and giving up five hits. Rodney Clark catalyzed the Fullerton offense with three hits, including two doubles, and five RBIs. Darrin Nelson added three hits for Fullerton (1-2, 13-6). The loss, which dropped the Chargers to 1-1, was charged to Chad Cook, who threw 4 innings, allowing five hits and four runs.
