San Diego Prep Baseball : Ieler Throws 10-Hit Shutout as Point Loma Wins, 11-0

Point Loma pitcher Rick Ieler made the right pitches when he had to Thursday afternoon in a nonleague high school baseball game at Point Loma High.

Ieler allowed 10 hits but did not yield a run and the Pointers posted an 11-0 victory over the Cardinals.

Point Loma (6-1) scored three runs in each of the first three innnings to turn the game into a rout. Mike Brownhoelzl hit a three-run homer in the second inning, and Orlando Hill connected for a two-run blast in the third to lead the Pointers’ 10-hit attack. Hoover fell to 3-5.

In other action:

Patrick Henry 14, El Cajon 1--Norman Whitehead, Casey McKeon and Mike Thomas all hit home runs and four Patriot pitchers combined on a five-hitter as Patrick Henry improved to 4-1 with the win at El Cajon.

Whitehead’s homer, his third of the season, gave Henry a 3-0 lead in the second inning. McKeon hit a solo home run in the third, and Thomas connected for a three-run shot in the sixth to help the Patriots pull away. Scott Middaugh (2-1) pitched three hitless innings to get the win. El Cajon fell to 1-4.

Mission Bay 5, Serra 0--Starting pitcher Pete Rodriguez allowed just two hits over five innings to improve his record to 2-1 and lead Mission Bay to the win at Serra High School.

The Bucs (6-2) also got strong relief pitching from John Hemmerly, who struck out five batters in two innings of work. Mission Bay scored single runs in the first, second and third innings. It added two in the fourth inning on a two-run double by shortstop Eric Hudson. Second baseman Rusty Filter added two hits for Mission Bay. Serra is 3-3.

Bonita Vista 16, Marian 11--Marian jumped out to a 9-0 lead, but the Barons (3-4) rallied for 10 runs in the fourth inning for the win at Bonita Vista High.

Billy Miller capped Bonita Vista’s rally with a three-run homer to give the Barons a 10-9 lead. Ken Guyton and David Woodhouse added RBI doubles in the inning.

Guyton, the Baron catcher, was 3 for 3 with two RBIs. Right fielder Tony Bush was 3 for 5 with five RBIs. Woodhouse, the designated hitter, was 3 for 5 with one RBI. Despite allowing seven runs in the first inning, Bonita Vista pitcher Lance Jordan picked up a complete game win. Marian is 2-2.

Mar Vista 10, Crawford 2--Manuel Mendivio (3-0) pitched a complete game and had three hits and three RBIs to lead the Mariners past the Colts at Mar Vista.

Bill Bilbray chipped in with three hits and two RBIs and Jose Ibbara had two hits to pace Mar Vista’s 15-hit attack. Mendivio, meanwhile, scattered five hits and struck out one to help the Mariners improve their record to 6-2.

Poway 10, Morse 8--The Titans built up a 9-3 lead then survived a four-run outburst by the Tigers in the seventh inning to hold on for the win at Poway. Poway improved to 6-1, and Morse fell to 5-2.

Chula Vista 9, St. Augustine 0--Junior left-hander Victor Oceguda pitched no-hit ball for six innings before settling for a two-hitter as the Spartans won their first game of the season after six losses at Chula Vista.

Oceguda struck out nine and received offensive help from Gilbert Canizales, who had two hits and a pair of RBIs. St. Augustine fell to 0-6-1.
