Division I : Old Dominion Holds Off Ohio State, 72-68
Medina Dixon, Lisa Blais and Marie Christian combined on five free throws in the final 40 seconds Saturday as Old Dominion held off Ohio State, 72-68, in the title game of the NCAA women’s Division I East Region basketball tournament.
The victory for the Lady Monarchs (29-3) puts them into the Final Four at Austin, Tex., this week against the winner of today’s game between Northeast Louisiana and Louisiana Tech in the Midwest Region.
Dixon, who had 18 points, as did the Buckeyes’ Tracey Hall, sank two free throws with 40 seconds left to give the Lady Monarchs a 69-66 lead.
Blais hit one of two free-throw attempts 17 seconds later to increase her team’s lead to 70-66.
Yvette Angel countered with two foul shots for the Buckeyes (28-3) with five seconds left to close it to within 70-68, but Christian closed the scoring with four seconds left by hitting a pair of free throws.
Tracy Claxton of the Lady Monarchs and Ohio State’s Hall led all players with 11 rebounds each.
