All-Central City Girls Basketball Team : Locke’s Beck, Clayton Head All-Star Squad

Denise Beck and Nancy Clayton, who engineered Locke’s drive to its third straight City Section 4-A high school title, head The Times’ 1984-85 All-Central City girls’ basketball team.

The 10-player squad will be honored tonight during ceremonies in the Harry Chandler Auditorium at Times Mirror Square. The guest speaker will be Joan Bonvicini, Cal State Long Beach women’s basketball coach.

Beck, a repeater from last year’s team, is a 5-9 forward, who averaged 18 points and 14.2 rebounds, despite being double-teamed on many occasions. She, along with Clayton, a 6-1 center, led Locke to a 23-3 record, including a 47-38 victory over Kennedy of Granada Hills in the City title game. Beck is expected to sign with the University of Arizona.

Clayton, a strong inside player, averaged 21 points and 15.6 rebounds, and is being recruited by Louisiana Tech, among others.

The other repeater from last year’s team is Amy Hughes, Jordan’s senior forward, who averaged 25 points and 19 rebounds. The 5-9 Hughes is being recruited by UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton and the University of Hawaii. Hughes couples quick feet with excellent leaping ability.

Washington, which finished 17-6 after a 9-10 season in 1983-’84, put two players on the team--senior forward Monica Cansler and junior guard Ayesha Brooks.

Cansler, who is being recruited by San Jose State, Colorado and New Mexico State, averaged 24.3 points and 7 rebounds a game. Brooks, a point guard, averaged 19 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists.

Three other juniors were also selected--guard Yolanda Kelley of Crenshaw, center Linda Broomfield of Fremont, and forward Yvette Mitchell of Manual Arts.

Kelley sparked Crenshaw to the City 3-A title, averaging 23.3 points and 17.1 rebounds for the Cougars, who finished 15-4. Broomfield, at 5-9, dominated the middle, averaging 25 points and 17 rebounds. The 5-11 Mitchell put together a solid season for the Toilers, averaging 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Two other strong rebounders were Dorsey’s Veruschka Holley and Belmont’s Alejandra Ayala. Holley, a 5-9 center, who is joining the Air Force, averaged 12 points and 12 rebounds. Ayala, a 5-10 forward who is being wooed by Cal Poly Pomona, averaged 14 points and 15 rebounds.
