Some Seniors Sign; Some Still Waiting

The national letter of intent day passed rather quietly through the Valley-area high school scene Wednesday.

While several basketball players signed with schools they had already committed to, several others decided to wait on offers in the making.

Tyrone Mitchell of Cleveland High signed with Arizona State, while teammate Andre Washington hooked up with Southwest Texas State, and Anthony Kidd decided on Washington State.

All three Cavaliers had announced their plans prior to Wednesday, the first day since the early signing period in November that athletes were allowed to sign.

Crespi’s Brian Capp still has not received an offer from a Division I school and will wait to make his decision. Cal State Northridge and Chapman College are reportedly interested in acquiring Capp’s services.

Joey Campanella and Alfie Basile, also of Crespi, will find out next week if they have been accepted to Columbia and will be playing Ivy League ball.

Kippie Brown, a member of The Times’ All-Valley girls’ basketball team, has committed to UC Irvine. Also, Ilene Hauser of Alemany signed with San Diego State.

Last week, Irvine appeared to be the leader in the race for Westlake’s Michelle Stevens, the Valley’s Player of the Year, but Stevens now has narrowed down her choices to Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount and will probably make her decision next week.

Cathy Cotti of Bell-Jeff and Monica Burke of Hart also are interested in Loyola Marymount, but neither has made a final decision.
