Titan Open Water Polo Tournament to Begin Today

Sixteen teams will compete in the inaugural Titan Open water polo tournament, which will be held today through Sunday at Independence Park in Fullerton. The tournament will be conducted by Cal State Fullerton’s new water polo coach, Kelly Capps.

Teams made up of players from UCLA, USC, Cal State Long Beach, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, UC Santa Barbara, Cal State Los Angeles, Cal State Fullerton and Sunny Hills High School will participate. Two pools of eight teams will play round-robin schedules, with the top four teams from each pool meeting Sunday to determine the overall champion.

Competition begins at 6 tonight, 9 a.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday. The championship game is scheduled for noon Sunday. Admission is free.

Mike Yellen, the 1983 and 1984 national racquetball champion, and Costa Mesa’s Lynn Adams, currently the second-ranked player on the Women’s Professional Racquetball Assn. tour, will compete in a special exhibition match at the Los Caballeros Racquet and Sports Club in Fountain Valley tonight at 7 o’clock.

A Practical Sports Psychology Workshop will be conducted by Kurt Krueger Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Administration Room 113 at Orange Coast College.

Aimed at breaking down the psychological and physiological barriers to peak performance, the program will present a variety of techniques to improve concentration, increase will power and prepare the competitor for sustained peak performance.

Krueger founded the Institute of Sports Psychology in 1982 and has trained world or national record holders in Asia, Australia, Europe and North America. The workshop is open to all competitors over 12 years of age, coaches and trainers, as well as any person interested in improving performance in any field. The cost of the workshop is $20.

Orange Coast College forward Shaughn Ryan has signed a national letter of intent to continue his basketball career at Arizona State next fall.

Ryan, a 6-foot 5-inch forward-guard, averaged 17.2 points per game in 1984-85 and led the Pirates to a fourth-place finish in the South Coast Conference. Ryan, who shot 55% from the floor and 81% from the free throw line, was an all-conference pick.

Ryan will become the second Orange Coast star to transfer to Arizona State in recent years. Former Pirate guard Chris Beasley played for the Sun Devils in 1982-83 and 1983-84 and led the team in scoring as a senior.

Ruth Waithera of Kenya, a 400-meter finalist in the Olympics last summer, highlights a field of athletes from 13 local colleges in Saturday’s Cal State Fullerton Titan Track and Field Invitational, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Fullerton College.

Cary Tyler, a triple jump finalist at the Olympic trials, heads the team from Cal State Bakersfield. Other schools competing are UC Santa Barbara, NCAA Division 2 power Cal State Los Angeles, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal Lutheran, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Chapman, Whittier, UC Riverside, UC San Diego and Pomona Pitzer.

Orange County Cop Bowl VII, a football game between the Garden Grove-Buena Park-Fullerton and Costa Mesa-Huntington Beach-Irvine police departments will be played next Friday night at 7:30 at Orange Coast College’s LeBard Stadium.

This year’s honorary captain will be Laura Bradbury, the still-missing victim of a kidnapping last October at Joshua Tree National Monument. Laura’s parents will be in attendance on her behalf. Last year’s honorary captain, child abuse-burn victim David Rothenberg, also will attend.

Halftime entertainment will be provided by the Los Angeles Rams cheerleaders, and several members of the Rams’ team will be on hand. Valuable prizes, such as a Ram player jerseys and autographed footballs, will be given away at halftime.

The Newport Beach Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor a track and field clinic for boys and girls in elementary and intermediate schools to be held Saturday at Newport Harbor High School from 9 a.m. to noon.

The clinic will be conducted by Newport Harbor track Coach Eric Tweit, while Dr. Arthur A. Walton will conduct an injury prevention clinic with a free examination for all participants. The annual Newport Beach track and field meet for elementary and intermediate school students will be held April 20.

The City of Orange and the Orange Chamber of Commerce will play host to their 24th annual golf tournament April 24 at the Green River Golf Course. The $50 entrance fee includes green fee, cart, refreshments, a banquet dinner and prizes.

Southern California College basketball Coach Bill Reynolds was recently named the NAIA Area 1 Coach of the Year. Area 1 encompasses nine western states. SCC guard Ken Bardsley was the NAIA’s third-leading free throw shooter this season with an 89.2% performance from the line (74 of 83). . . . Six players from Orange County have been selected to play for the water polo team that will represent the United States in the World Maccabiah Games in Israel, July 15-25. They are Marty Florman of Santa Ana and UCLA, Larry Jacobs of Corona del Mar and UCLA, David Kent of Corona del Mar and Claremont, Mark Maizel of Irvine and the University of California and brothers Dan and Robert Solomon, of Irvine. Dan played at Columbia University and is now with the New York Athletic Club, while Robert was a prep All-American at North Miami High School before moving to California and attending UC Berkeley. The team’s head coach, George Harris Jr., will be assisted by Jim Sprague, coach of Sunny Hills High School. . . . UC Irvine women’s volleyball Coach Mike Puritz has announced the signing of Kimberly Fairchild, a 6-foot middle blocker from Boron High School. Fairchild, the most valuable player in the Desert Inyo League and a first-team All-Southern Section selection, will join the Anteaters this fall. . . . Boys 14 and under are invited to try out Saturday at 10 a.m. at Corona del Mar High School for an all-star soccer team that will compete in the Dana Cup this summer in Denmark. . . . The Fountain Valley girls’ gymnastic team travels to Arroyo Saturday night to compete in the Arroyo Invitational at 6 o’clock. . . . Southern California Over-The-Line is accepting teams for its annual Spring Over-The-Line Tournament, to be held in Fountain Valley’s Mile Square Park Sunday.
