College Baseball : Chapman Rallies to Defeat Pomona, 8-6

Chapman College came back from a 6-4 deficit with four runs in the top of the ninth inning to beat Cal Poly Pomona, 8-6, in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game Tuesday at Pomona.

Dan Grijalva’s two-out single with the bases loaded gave the Panthers a 7-6 lead, and Dave Swatek added an RBI single to provide the final margin as Chapman rallied for four runs with two outs. Craig Kushe started the rally with a solo home run that cut Pomona’s lead to 6-5.

Pomona had taken a 6-4 lead on a two-run homer by Marty Rivera in the bottom of the sixth.

Grijalva also had a solo homer in the fourth for Chapman (6-12). Pomona is 7-3 in conference play.

In other college action:

Pepperdine 6, Cal State Fullerton 3--Brad Bierley hit his 17th and 18th home runs of the year to lead the Waves to the nonconference win at Pepperdine. Fullerton scored three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead, but Pepperdine rallied for four runs in the sixth, sparked by Bierley’s second homer.

Scott Marrett, Mike Fetters and Dave Miramontes combined to limit the Titans to three hits, with Fetters getting the win that improves his record to 8-1. Dion Beck (8-7) took the loss.

Nezi Balelo was 2 for 4 with two doubles for Pepperdine (34-7-1). John Eccles had a three-run homer in the fifth inning for Fullerton (25-23-1).

Southern California College 5, Point Loma 1--Vanguard pitcher Brian Otten, coming off a one-hitter Saturday against Biola, allowed four hits and struck out five in the victory. The win put SCC 1 1/2 games ahead of Point Loma in the NAIA District 3 standings.
