Gwynn Powers Aztecs Over Toreros, 10-7

San Diego State scored nine runs in the first two innings, then held on to beat the University of San Diego, 10-7, Thursday afternoon in a nonconference baseball battle between cross-town rivals.

Chris Gwynn rapped out three hits and drove in three runs to pace the Aztecs, who boosted their record to 37-21-1. The Toreros, meanwhile, fell to 12-29-1 after the loss on their home field.

Other hitting standouts for SDSU included Steve Hill and Dave Campagna, who each contributed two hits and one RBI.

Bill Blount started the game for the Aztecs, working the first five innings and getting the win. Paul Claes earned a save by blanking USD on four hits over the last four innings.

The Toreros were paced by Casey Morales and Mark Trafton. Morales pitched seven innings in relief, surrendering two runs on two hits. Trafton belted a three-run home run that pulled his side to within 9-5 in the third inning.

Sean Baron and David Jacas added two hits apiece for USD.

Both teams resume action today. The Aztecs host another local rival, United States International University, tonight at 7, and the Toreros host West Coast Athletic Conference foe Santa Clara this afternoon at 2:30.
