College Baseball : Hansell Leads Aztecs to 13-1 Win

SAN DIEGO — Kirk Hansell rapped out four hits and drove in two runs, and Ron Vanegas hit his second home run of the year with a runner on in the fifth inning to lead the San Diego State Aztecs to a 13-1 victory over United States International University in a nonconference college baseball game at Smith Field Friday night.
Mark Grace also had two hits for SDSU, which won for the fourth consecutive time and raised its record to 39-21-1. USIU fell to 15-19-1.
Russ Elsberry (2-2) pitched seven innings to get the win and combined with Tim Wahl and Richard Holsman on a six-hitter.
The Aztecs and Gulls meet today in a doubleheader at Smith Field at 1 p.m. The first game will be shown live locally on KTTY-Channel 69.
In other college baseball:
USD 3, Santa Clara 2--Home runs by Dave Rolls and Paul Van Stone propelled the Toreros to the victory over visiting Santa Clara in a West Coast Athletic Conference game.
Van Stone’s two-run homer in the fourth inning gave USD (4-12, 13-30-1) the cushion it needed to survive a late rally by the Broncos (8-7, 25-18). Tom Sizer was the winning pitcher, with Mark Hawblitzel getting a save.
The same teams meet today at noon in a doubleheader at USD.
