Prep Baseball : Cummings Paces Orange Lutheran to a 13-5 Victory

John Cummings overcame early control problems Friday and struck out 15 batters to lead Orange Lutheran High School to a 13-5 Olympic League win over Ontario Christian at Orange.

Cummings walked three and threw three wild pitches in the first inning before settling down. Orange Lutheran scored seven runs in the first inning as Derek Lee and Scott Kinney both hit three-run home runs. Lee hit a second home run in the sixth inning.

In Academy League action:

Heritage 6, Liberty Christian 2--Daren Beck pitched a complete game, allowing three hits and striking out eight, to lead the Patriots to victory in Bellis Park at Buena Park.

David Beeler led the Heritage offense by going 3 for 3 with two doubles and an RBI. Heritage improved its league record to 5-3. Liberty Christian is 1-5.

Leffingwell Christian 3, Newport Christian 1--It was a pitching dual at Newport Beach as Newport Christian’s Joe Alston and winning pitcher Randy Weller each had nine strikeouts. Weller allowed Newport only three hits.

Leffingwell scored twice in the first inning. Tom Smith scored the first run of the game on a single by David Fowler. Fowler stole second and came home on a double by Weller. The Conquerors got a run in the second when Whittak Sun walked, stole second and scored on Alston’s single.
