CSUN Sends Eight to Ojai Tourney

Eight members of the Cal State Northridge tennis teams will compete today in the prestigious Ojai Invitational Tournament, which will be held at the Ojai Racquet Club in Ojai.

Singles players Pierre Mareschal and Bill Johnson and the doubles team of Ed Charles and Robert Burns will represent the men in the four-day competition, which is one of the nation’s top amateur tennis tournaments. The Lady Matadors will send their top two singles players, Marla Reid and Missy Conn and the doubles team of Cindy Woodhouse and Susie Campbell.

The Lady Matadors, ranked No. 3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, secured their bid for a national championship berth next month with a 7-2 win against Cal State Bakersfield and an 8-1 victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo last week.

The mens team also added two more victories to their 14-15 overall, 6-2 conference record last week with a 7-2 victory over Cal Poly Pomona and an 8-0 win in a rain-shortened match against Cal State L.A..

Miller Named Huskies Coach

Steve Miller, former Fairfax High School basketball coach, has been named head basketball coach at North Hollywood. Miller, who coached Fairfax to two-consecutive City 3-A championships in 1978 and 1979, has also served as head coach at Los Angeles City College. Miller replaces Ernie Foli, who resigned at the end of last season.

Volleyball Regionals at CSUN

Four of the top five volleyball teams in the nation will battle for the West Regional championship and a trip to the Final Four tonight at the Cal State Northridge gymnasium.

The regional tournament will feature the teams that finished second through fifth in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The qualifiers are second ranked UCLA, third ranked UCLA, fourth ranked UC Santa Barbara and fifth ranked Stanford.

UCLA and UC Santa Barbara will kick off the single elimination tournament at 6 p.m. Stanford and USC will meet at 8 p.m.. The winners of the two matches will meet at 7:30 p.m. April 27 at Cal State Northridge to determine the regional champions.

Vaqueros to Compete at Mt. SAC

The Glendale Community College men’s and women’s track and field teams will compete at Mt. San Antonio College today, after winning their respective Inland Valley Conference meets last week.

The women’s team will go to Santa Monica College for the Southern California Preliminarys April 26. The men will travel to Bakersfield on April 27.

Freshman Joe Richardson, who improved his school record to 54-1 after earning Field Athlete of the Meet honors at the Bakersfield Relays, will lead the Vaqueros. Richardson, who set the national high school triple jump record with a 53.6 effort last year, will compete in the mile relay as well as the triple jump.

Freshman Nicole Abernathy, who broke the school’s 5-4 high jump record with a 5-6 jump at the Bakersfield Relays, will participate in the high jump at Santa Monica.

Raiders Will Play Oak Park

The Los Angeles Raiders football team will play the Oak Park High School team in a benefit for the Oak Park Athletic Association April 27 at 8 p.m..

The pro-prep matchup will be preceeded by a game at 6 p.m. between the Oak Park varsity football squad and the Oak Park alumni. Raiders Howie Long, Todd Christensen, Lester Hayes, Rod Martin, Cliff Branch, Chris Bahr and Mike Haynes--to name a few--are expected to play.

Matadors’ Almeido, White Named MVPs

Guard Mike Almeido and forward Larry White were chosen as the co-Most Valuable Players on the 1984-85 Cal State Northridge basketball team.

Almeido, the 1985 California Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Year, averaged 13.3 points for the 1985 CCAA champion Matadors, who finished the season at 20-10. White, a first team All-CCAA selection, was second on the team in scoring with 11.4 points. He led the team in rebounding with a 5.6 per game average. He set a career-high record with 17 rebounds against Eastern Montana in the first round of the NCAA Division II West Regionals.

Senior center Tom Ruetten was named the Most Improved Player after earning an All-CCAA honorable mention. Wayne Fluker was given the Most Inspirational Player Award.

Coach Pete Cassidy, who was honored as the NCAA Division II West District Coach of the Year and the CCAA Coach of the Year, will have five players returning to the team next season.
