Rodriguez Brothers Lead Mission Bay Over Kearny

The Rodriguez brothers teamed up to lead Mission Bay High School past visiting Kearny, 3-2, in Western League baseball action Friday afternoon.

Pedro Rodriguez singled to drive in his brother, Enzo, with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning, helping the third-ranked Buccaneers (4-1, 17-3) to remain tied with Clairemont and University City atop the Western League.

Left-hander John Hemmerly went the route for Mission Bay, running his record to 8-0. He struck out nine; both of the runs he allowed were unearned. His earned-run average is 0.15 over 47 innings. David Portugal pitched the entire game for Kearny (1-4, 8-8).

Elsewhere in the Western League:

Clairemont 8, University 6--The Chiefs scored (4-1, 13-6) scored five in the sixth inning to defeat the Dons (3-3, 11-8).

In the Eastern League:

Patrick Henry 10, Morse 1--Kasey McKeon and Mike Thomas drove in three runs apiece to lead the top-rated Patriots (5-0, 15-1) at Morse (0-5, 8-11).

In the Grossmont League:

Helix 9, Mount Miguel 3--The Highlanders (5-3, 12-6) used a balanced attack to beat the Matadors at Helix. Larry Simms and Tim Neal each had three hits and an RBI. Neil Hall, the winning pitcher, added two hits and an RBI.

Granite Hills 6, Grossmont 1--Sophomore Kurt Southworth drove in three runs with a homer and two singles to pace the Eagles (7-1, 15-3). Frank Carey went 3-for-3 and stole four bases for Granite Hills, and Damon Hansel drove in two runs. The Foothillers fall to 3-5, 7-10.

Santana 6, El Cajon 4--Jim Tatum had two RBIs and Jeff Barry had three hits for the Sultans (6-2, 13-5). The Braves are 1-7, 2-11.

Valhalla 5, El Capitan 4--A seventh-inning single by Ted Gilmore drove home the winning run at Valhalla. The Norsemen (7-1, 15-2) are tied for first place with Granite Hills.

In the Eastern League:

Serra 11, Madison 7--The Conquistadors (2-3, 7-9) capitalized on seven walks and five Madison errors to beat the Warhawks (2-3, 11-6) at Madison.

Mira Mesa 7, Point Loma 4--The Marauders (4-1, 12-4) remained in second place, a game behind Patrick Henry, by beating the Pointers (2-3, 9-6) at Point Loma.

In the Central League:

Hoover 19, St. Augustine 5--The Cardinals (3-2, 9-8) scored five runs in the fifth inning and eight in the sixth to break open a close game. Jeff Shepherd had four hits and drove in three runs for Hoover.

Lincoln 13, Crawford 8--Lincoln spotted the Colts (3-2, 7-11) five runs in the top of the first, but came back to win. Hornet catcher Malcolm Glover had three hits and four RBIs, and Anthony Johnson drove in three runs.

Christian 7, San Diego 4--The Patriots (5-0, 10-6) maintained a two-game lead in the Central with this road win over the Cavers (0-5, 4-14). Bill Donley went 4 for 4 for Christian, and Steve Mills had three hits and three RBIs.

In the Metro League:

Bonita Vista 11, Castle Park 3--John Nelson had three RBIs and two hits to lead the Barons (5-2, 10-8) to a win over the Trojans at Castle Park. Rob Savarese chipped in with three hits and two RBIs for Bonita Vista, which trails first-place Mar Vista by a half-game.

In the Avocado League:

Escondido 9, El Camino 8--At Escondido, the Wildcats scored five in the top of the sixth to erase a 4-3 deficit, but the Cougars struck back with five in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a victory. A two-run double by Jason Hobbs was the winning hit. The Wildcats are (2-5, 5-13).

San Pasqual 9, Oceanside 4--The sixth-ranked Golden Eagles (6-1, 15-2) beat the Pirates (2-5, 2-14) at Oceanside.

San Marcos 10, Carlsbad 6--Keith Pollins and Mike Ponio had three RBIs apiece, as the Knights (6-1, 13-5) remain tied for first.

In the Palomar League:

San Dieguito 6, Fallbrook 5--A two-out, sixth-inning double by Scott Strubbe gave the Mustangs (1-6, 4-14) their first league win of the year. The Warriors’ record is 3-4, 11-9.

Mt. Carmel 11, Torrey Pines 1--Dean Siskowski lost his no-hitter with two out in the fifth inning as the Sundevils (6-1, 13-6) beat the Falcons (4-3, 9-10) at Torrey Pines to remain atop the Palomar standings. Steve May singled to right to break up Siskowski’s no-hitter.

Vista 2, Poway 1--Eric Hause hit a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in pinch runner David Boyett with what proved to be the winning run in the sixth inning for the Panthers (5-2, 12-5) at Poway (2-5, 10-9).
