KCBS-TV Channel 2 collected more than one-third of the 186 nominations announced Tuesday for the 1984 Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards, with its magazine series “2 on the Town” getting more itself--25--than any other local station.

The CBS-owned station, which won 16 local Emmys last year--compared to seven each for its rivals, KABC-TV Channel 7 and KNBC Channel 4--received 64 nominations from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

Meanwhile, in a testament to the continuing growth of its local programming efforts, public TV station KCET Channel 28 garnered 24 Emmy nominations and took the runner-up station honors behind KCBS-TV. A year ago, it received nine nominations and won six.

KABC-TV picked up 21 nominations and KNBC got 20. Among the independents, KTLA Channel 5 had 17 nominations and KTTV Channel 11 got 16.

Winners of the Emmy Awards, meant to honor the best local television programming in Los Angeles and Orange counties during the 1984 calendar year, will be announced at a dinner ceremony June 1.

KCBS-TV’s 7-year-old “2 on the Town” was nominated as best information series and two of its installments--on Berlin and the children of Belfast--were nominated as best information special. Three others were nominated as best entertainment special.

“2 on the Town” host Melody Rogers received two Emmy nominations, as best performer and as best host--a category in which she won last year, along with co-host Steve Edwards. Edwards subsequently left KCBS-TV and was nominated Tuesday opposite Rogers, for his work as host of KABC-TV’s “Hollywood Closeup.”

Also nominated as best host were Truman Jacques for KCBS-TV’s “Interface” and Jim Hill for KCBS-TV’s “USC: A Return to the Roses.”

Channel 2’s Linda Douglass received two nominations in the news reporting category, along with Ross Becker of KCBS-TV, Bob Bruckner and Bob Navarro of KNBC, Jim Murphy of KHJ-TV, Chris Harris of KTTV and Paul Dandridge of KABC-TV.

Nominated for investigative reporting were KCBS-TV’s Jim Mitchell, KHJ-TV’s Dan Medina and KNBC’s Patrick Healy. Channel 2’s Bill Stout, who won in the news commentary category last year, was nominated again, along with Bill Press of KABC-TV.

Among other stations receiving nominations, KHJ-TV Channel 9 and KOCE Channel 50 got 6 each, KCOP Channel 13 got four, ON-TV and Valley Cable got two each and KLCS Channel 58, KIHS-TV in Ontario, Falcon Cable and Coast Community College District got one apiece.

The TV academy’s nominations are selected by preliminary judging panels from among entries submitted by individuals. The winners will be chosen in another round of judging by peer-group panels.
