Cal State Northridge scored two runs in the 10th inning Wednesday to beat Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 8-6. It was the second win in as many days for CSUN against the Mustangs.

After Cal Poly SLO took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, CSUN came back quickly. The Matadors scored two runs in the second, third and fourth innings to go ahead, 6-2.

The Mustangs, however, refused to give up. They scored a pair of their own in the fifth inning and one each in the seventh and ninth to send the game into extra innings.

But in the 10th, CSUN’s Gary Williams led off with a single and scored on a double by Paul Kaplan, who went 4 for 6.

After losing pitcher Mike Briare walked Dick Jaquez, Scott McIntyre tagged him for a single. The next batter, Jimmy Mitchell, then singled off Briare to send Jaquez home from second.

Matador pitcher Glen Braybrooks (7-1) then shut down the Mustangs in the bottom of the inning.

In Tuesday’s game, CSUN batters hammered Mustang pitching to coast to an easy 11-3 win.

Bryant Long was 4 for 6 and Gary Williams was 3 for 6 to help out winning pitcher Tom Harmon (8-3).

The victories put CSUN’s record at 18-7 in league, 38-18-1 overall, and in a tight race to the playoffs with Cal Poly Pomona. The Matadors will face Pomona five more times this season. The next game is set for today at CSUN.
