Southern Section Badminton Playoffs : Top-Seeded Estancia Routs Hacienda Heights Wilson

Estancia High School routed Hacienda Heights Wilson, 19-0, Friday in a first-round match of the Southern Section 4-A badminton playoffs at Estancia.

The Sea View League champion Eagles, the top-seeded team in the 4-A division, improved their record to 16-0.

Estancia was led by No. 1 boys singles player Manh Trinh and No. 2 boys singles player Kuan Nguyen, who both won two matches.

In other 4-A playoff action:

Garden Grove 15, Huntington Beach 4--The No. 4 seeded Argonauts (13-3) were led by the brother-and-sister team of Kahn and Thuy Nguyen. Kahn, playing No. 1 boys, swept both his singles matches and then combined with Tracy Hudson to win both of their mixed doubles matches.

Thuy, playing No. 1 girls, also swept her singles matches. She later teamed with Peter Choe to sweep matches as No. 1 mixed doubles. Garden Grove advances to Tuesday’s second round.

Fountain Valley 15, Pasadena 4--The Baron’s No. 1 and No. 2 mixed doubles team’s swept all their matches to lead Fountain Valley into the second round. No. 1 of Pauline McMeekin and Jeff Weins defeated Joey Mercado and Dora Habel, 6-15, 15-12, 15-7. No. 2 of Wanda Mihaic and Dave Hendricks defeated Carl Jemerson and Heather Dajen, 15-5, 15-8.

In 3-A playoff action:

Katella 14, Gladstone 5--The Empire League co-champion Knights beat Gladstone at Katella to improve their record to 13-3. Katella was led by No. 1 boys singles player Steve Guidi and the No. 1 boys doubles team of Sung-Joon Bang and Jason Yeh. Guidi beat Gladstone’s Kevin Headworth, 17-14, 15-6 and Bang and Yeh teamed to beat the Gladiators Tim Girard and Jim Johnston, 15-6, 18-17.

Kennedy 11, Bassett 8--Jack Lee won two boys’ singles matches and teamed with Phung Ngo to win a mixed doubles match as the Irish beat Bassett at La Puente. Kennedy, co-champion of the Empire League, improved its record to 14-2.
