Prep BASEBALL : Mohr Is Master of Westlake

Share

Thousand Oaks High put together seven singles and a walk in a six-run fifth inning to overcome a two-run deficit and defeat Westlake, 9-5, Friday in a Marmonte League game at home.

The Lancers, who took a giant step toward making the 4-A Southern Section playoffs with the win, got a gutsy complete-game pitching performance from Anthony Mohr. The senior allowed eight hits while striking out two, and he silenced the Warrior bats after getting the fifth-inning cushion.

After Westlake (5-6) scored two runs in the top of the first inning, Rod Stillwell and Greg Hansen led off the Lancer first with back-to-back home runs to tie the game.

Westlake added one run in the fourth and two in the fifth, but Thousand Oaks (6-4) retaliated with its big burst. Brian Borck, Kevin Medeiros, Dennis Rulli, Chris Heimler, Stillwell, Eddie Hall and Chris Newman each singled in the fifth for the Lancers.

Sean Thompson and Matt Franco had two hits each for Westlake, and Brad Gossen and Jim Henderson each doubled.

Bell Jeff 5, LaSalle 3

Larry Cormier pitched a complete game to lead Bellarmine-Jefferson (8-3) to a Sante Fe League win at LaSalle.

Cormier (5-2) allowed only one earned run and struck out seven. He was backed by a three-run home run by Jeff Miljanich, three singles by Nick Pavcic and two hits each by Fernando Gauna and Pete Vucurevic.

Joel Furin doubled twice and tripled for LaSalle (7-4).

Pater Noster 2, Chaminade 1

Chaminade pitcher Denny Vigo lost his first game of the season largely because of two errors he committed.

With the scored tied in the second inning, 1-1, Alex Echevarria walked and moved to second when Vigo overthrew first on a pickoff attempt. After Echevarria stole third, Oliver Reina hit a ground ball to Vigo. The pitcher again overthrew first, which allowed Echevarria to score the winning run.

Vigo (3-1) hit the first batter he faced in the first inning, Randy Dacosta, who promptly stole second. Eric Espinosa, the winning pitcher, hit a single to drive in Dacosta for the game’s first run.

John Sunde doubled for Chaminade (8-2) in the first inning, moved to second on Peter Moglia’s single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dave Keating.

Burroughs 5, Hart 0

Ray Churney pitched a shutout and singled home Burroughs’ first run to lead the Indians to a Foothill League win at home.

Churney allowed only three hits and struck out six. Tommy Ruffner homered and Ernie Carrillo and Chris Rizzotti each doubled for Burroughs.

Hart, which had already clinched the league title, fell to 10-3 in league. Burroughs is 4-9.
