David Martinez, making only his second start this season, had a career-high 11 strikeouts Friday to lead Sunny Hills High School to an 11-0 win over Sonora.
Martinez (4-1) has been used almost exclusively in relief, but after the Lancers clinched the league title Wednesday with a 5-3 win over Troy, Coach Doug Elliott decided to let the senior start. Martinez responded with his first complete game. He walked only one batter.
With Martinez taking care of the Raiders form the mound, David Wackerman took care of the offense. Wackerman was 3 for 4 with two home runs and four RBIs. Wackerman’s lead-off home run in the second sparked a four-run Lancer inning.
Paul Abbott extended his hitting streak to 21 games by going 2 for 4 with two RBIs.
In other Freeway League action:
Troy 4, Fullerton 0--Tony Panetti pitched a two-hit shutout and John Mash drove in two runs as the Warriors beat the Indians at Fullerton.
La Habra 8, Buena Park 2--Tim Witherspoon sparked a four-run third inning for the Highlanders with a two-run home run. The Coyotes made four errors allowing La Habra four unearned runs.
