San Diego Prep Baseball : Southworth’s Hit Gives Granite Hills a 7-6 Victory Over Helix

Granite Hills High School’s second-ranked baseball team continued to turn back the challenges of the county’s toughest league Monday, defeating Helix, 7-6, at Granite Hills for its 10th consecutive Grossmont League win.

Kurt Southworth delivered a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning to score pinch-runner Eric Peterson from third base and help the Eagles improve their record to 18-3 overall, 10-1 in league. Fourth-place Helix fell to 14-8, 7-5.

Lance Allister hit a three-run home run in the first inning Monday to help Granite Hills get started and the Eagles added single runs in the second and fifth innings to take a 6-3 lead.

Helix came back to tie in the top of the sixth on a two-run single by Tim Quinn and an RBI single by Brian Fisher, before Southworth delivered the winning hit in the seventh.

In other Grossmont League action:

Valhalla 5, El Cajon 1--Rick Tennent pitched a six-hitter and struck out 10 to lead the seventh-ranked Norsemen (8-3, 16-4) past the Braves (2-10, 3-14) at El Cajon. Sam Gammo hit a solo home run and drove in another run to help Valhalla remain in a second-place tie with Santana.

Santana 5, Grossmont 3--Jeff Barry pitched a shutout into the seventh inning and Dale Henson hit a two-run homer in the sixth to help the 10th-ranked Sultans (8-3, 15-6) past the Foothillers (6-6, 10-11) at Santana. Van Wilson hit a three-run homer in the top of the seventh to account for Grossmont’s runs.

El Capitan 12, Monte Vista 4--Kevin Gallup drove in five runs with a three-run homer and two-run single and Brad Burton had three hits and two RBIs to lead the Vaqueros (5-7, 7-14) past the Monarchs (2-10, 5-15) at El Capitan. Jim Medlin allowed no runs and three hits over the first five innings to pick up the win.
