College Baseball : Amaya Sparks Chapman Extra-Inning Victory

Eli Amaya tripled with one out in the 10th inning, then scored on a throwing error by Cal State Los Angeles catcher Scott Lovelady to give Chapman College a 6-5 win over the Golden Eagles in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game Tuesday in Los Angeles.

Cal State Los Angeles had two on with two out in the 10th before Chapman reliever Mark Lomeli got Steve Hesla to fly out to end it. Lomeli (9-10) got the win.

Dan Skarshaug was 4 for 4 with 1 RBI and 3 stolen bases for the Panthers (9-19, 21-28).

In other college action:

University of San Diego 7, UC Irvine 6--John Slaught scored on Paul Van Stone’s sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to give the Toreros a nonconference win at San Diego.

Slaught opened the inning with a single, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice. He was 3 for 4 with a triple and 1 RBI. Irvine catcher Steve Morgan was 4 for 5, with a triple, 1 RBI and 3 runs scored. USD improved to 16-37-1. UC Irvine fell to 22-30.

USIU 8, Cal State Fullerton 7--The Titans blew a 7-5 lead by allowing the Gulls to score three runs in the top of the ninth in the loss at Fullerton. Steve Hendricks singled with the bases loaded for the first run, then Titan reliever Doug Robertson threw wild pitches to enable the tying and winning runs to score.

The loss drops Fullerton to 33-30-1. USIU is 20-27. Roger Zottneck had 3 hits, 2 runs and 1 RBI for the Titans.
