Leffingwell’s Coup at Avalon Doubly Sweet

Share

When the Leffingwell Christian High School baseball team left Avalon High last week after a pair of Academy League wins, it was the first time that anyone connected with either school could remember a visiting team sweeping a pair of games from Avalon on its Santa Catalina Island home field.

Senior pitcher Randy Wellen of Leffingwell Christian pitched two complete games in the span of less than 24 hours and went the distance in both in upping his seasonal mark to 10-0. Wellen struck out eight batters in a 13-3 romp Friday afternoon, then fanned five more Saturday morning in a 2-0 win.

With the victories, Leffingwell Christian clinched its third consecutive league title. The Lions are 14-5 overall. The Southern Section Small School playoffs get under way next week.
