Smitheran Honored--Bill (Smitty) Smitheran, longtime coach and athletic director at Downey High School from 1943 to 1971, has been inducted into the CIF Southern Section Hall of Fame. Smitheran coached football, basketball and track and under his administration the Vikings became a power in swimming and water polo. He also was a founder of the Moore League.

Biola Basketball--The Biola University basketball team will play an alumni team at 7:30 p.m. Friday to raise money for a summer missionary trip to Australia and New Zealand. Tickets are $2 in advance and $3 at the door.

Special Track Meet--The Melbourne School for the Mentally Retarded will hold its 12th annual track meet at 9:30 a.m. May 23 at 21341 Claretta Ave., Lakewood. More than 300 youngsters, representing nine schools, are expected to compete.

Youth Track Meet--The Arco Jesse Owens Track Meet for boys and girls 7 to 14 years old will be held at Wilson High School, 4400 East 10th St., Long Beach, at 9 a.m. May 18. Top qualifiers will advance to the regional championships at Cal State Los Angeles. Information may be obtained by calling 420-2158.

Over-the-Line--The fifth annual Long Beach Open Over-the-Line softball tournament will be held at Ocean Boulevard and Bay Shore Avenue in Belmont Shore on May 19. Entry fee is $21 per team. Interested men’s and women’s teams may call 630-2298.
