Ted Simmons got a second chance and didn’t jump at it. His patience paid off.

Simmons, who bounced into a bases-loaded double play in the third inning, hit a tie-breaking, two-run double in the seventh as the Milwaukee Brewers snapped the Kansas City Royals’ six-game winning streak, 7-2, Saturday at Milwaukee.

It was only Milwaukee’s fifth victory in its last 19 games.

“In the third inning, I swung at the first pitch and I shouldn’t have, so there was some doubt in my mind when I batted in the seventh,” said Simmons, who had three hits. “I knew there was no point swinging at just anything.

“And when (the count) went to 2 and 1, he (relief pitcher Joe Beckwith) threw a fastball, and I hit it right on the nose.”

Mark Brouhard followed with another two-run double as the Brewers scored five times in the inning.

The Royals had tied the score in the top of the seventh when Steve Balboni hit his eighth home run.

The Brewers loaded the bases against Kansas City starter Danny Jackson (2-2) on Paul Molitor’s double and two walks before Beckwith came in to face Simmons.

Milwaukee’s Moose Haas (4-2) scattered eight hits and pitched his third complete game of the season.

Detroit 9, Oakland 6--Darrell Evans homered for the fourth game in a row, a three-run shot in a four-run first inning, and the Tigers outslugged the A’s at Oakland.

Evans’ sixth homer of the year helped Dan Petry (7-2) become the league’s first seven-game winner. Petry allowed five runs and nine hits in seven innings before giving way to Willie Hernandez.

Evans also had three singles to go 4 for 4 for the second time in four games.

Alan Trammell hit a one-out solo homer in the first off Steve McCatty (2-2). McCatty walked Nelson Simmons and Lance Parrish before Evans slammed his homer into the right-field bleachers.

Dave Kingman hit his ninth homer for the A’s.

Cleveland 4, Boston 1--Neal Heaton and Tom Waddell combined on a four-hitter as the Indians ended a five-game losing streak by beating the Red Sox at Cleveland.

Heaton (3-3) allowed three hits in 6 innings while striking out two and walking five. Waddell came in with runners at first and second and two out in the seventh inning and retired Dwight Evans on a line drive to left. He went on to earn his seventh save.

The Indians took advantage of the only two walks issued by Bruce Hurst (1-4) to score the lead run. Hurst walked Andre Thornton and Pat Tabler with two out in the Cleveland sixth. Benny Ayala, who was recalled Thursday from Maine of the Triple-A International League, singled to right-center field to score Thornton.

Toronto 3, Minnesota 1--Jim Clancy gave the Blue Jays a shot in the arm with his longest stint of the season in a victory over the Twins at Minneapolis.

Clancy (1-1) scattered eight hits and struck out six over 6 innings. Clancy, who opened the season on the disabled list following an appendectomy, was making only his fourth start. Jim Acker pitched the final two innings for his fifth save.

The Twins’ only run came in the second when Tim Teufel doubled home Roy Smalley, who walked.

Jesse Barfield had a double and triple and scored two runs, while Rance Mulliniks, Willie Upshaw and Tony Fernandez each drove in a run for the Blue Jays.

Texas 7, Chicago 2--Ex-Dodger Burt Hooton posted his first American League victory, and the Rangers gave Bobby Valentine his first managerial victory and snapped a seven-game losing streak by beating the White Sox at Chicago.

Hooton (1-1) allowed only four hits, but he needed sixth-inning help from Greg Harris, who notched his second save.

Chicago’s Britt Burns (5-3) ran his string of scoreless innings to 19 before the Rangers scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning on Gary’s Ward’s run-scoring double and Don Slaught’s run-scoring grounder for a 2-1 lead.

The Rangers were leading, 3-2, in the sixth when Slaught and Pete O’Brien hit consecutive doubles. Texas wrapped it up in the seventh on Cliff Johnson’s two-run single.
