USFL Roundup : Gold Strikes Last to Beat the Generals

Bill Johnson ran for three touchdowns to offset Herschel Walker’s three touchdowns and 142 yards Sunday as the Denver Gold defeated the New Jersey Generals, 28-24, in front of a crowd of 29,139 at Denver.

The Generals (8-5) took a 24-21 lead four minutes into the final quarter on a one-yard dive by Walker, who topped 100 yards for the seventh straight game. Walker twice dived over the line on fourth-down plays in the drive, scoring the second time.

Denver (9-4) answered with an 80-yard scoring march as quarterback Bob Gagliano hit four different receivers for 69 yards to set up a one-yard plunge by Johnson with 6:02 left. Johnson finished with 23 carries for 98 yards.

New Jersey opened the scoring on the first play from scrimmage when Heisman Trophy winners Doug Flutie and Walker hooked up for a 68-yard touchdown when Walker ran away from Denver linebacker John Nevins.

Gagliano completed 17-of-31 passes for 242 yards, while Flutie was 5-for-15 for 141 yards.

Arizona 30, Portland 21--Luis Zendejas kicked three field goals before 15,275 fans at Portland and the Outlaws snapped a six-game losing streak by handing the Breakers a sixth straight defeat.

Doug Williams, who completed 17-of-28 passes for 208 yards, took the Outlaws (5-8) to a 27-0 lead early in the second half by throwing a pair of touchdown passes--a 12-yarder to Kim Anderson and a four-yarder to Ron Wheeler. Reggie Brown ran three yards for the other touchdown.
