Many people believe that this will finally be the year that La Jolla’s incredible string of 15 straight San Diego Section boy’s tennis championships is broken. In fact, the Vikings are seeded second in this year’s tournament behind Torrey Pines.

La Jolla, however, didn’t show any signs of folding in Monday’s first round as it rolled past Crawford, 26-2. The Vikings’ No. 1 doubles team of Mike Mitchell and Jason Halquist did not yield a game in its four sets of play and the No. 2 team of Barry Saywitz and Steve Mosher dropped only two games.

The victory sends La Jolla into today’s quarterfinals against San Pasqual, which surprised seventh-seeded Valhalla on Monday, 21 1/2-6 1/2. Jeff Posner won all four of his singles matches and the doubles team of Jerry Lohner and Damien Macaluso won all four of its sets to lead the Eagles.
