San Diego Section Team Tennis : Torrey Pines and La Jolla Advance to Semifinals

Top-seeded Torrey Pines High School, showing its strength in doubles, beat fellow Palomar League team Vista, 19 1/2-8 1/2, in the San Diego Section team tennis quarterfinals Tuesday at Whispering Palms.

The Falcons’ No. 1 doubles team of Craig Ellison and Tim Bubnack swept its four sets, and teammates Jeff Babikian and Andy Reynolds won three of four.

Ellison’s younger brother, Mark, led Torrey Pines in singles by winning three of four sets. Paul Richards won all four of his singles sets to pace Vista.

The Falcons (19-0) face Avocado League champion Ramona in the semifinals at 3 o’clock today at the Rancho Bernardo Inn.

“Ramona is very similar to us,” said Anne Meigs, Torrey Pines coach. “They have a lot of fine players and a lot of depth. It will all come down to whoever has the better day.”

In other playoff matches:

La Jolla 18 1/2, San Pasqual 7 1/2--The second-seeded Vikings ran their record to 17-0 after by winning 11 of 14 singles points from the Eagles at Bishop’s. La Jolla’s No. 2 singles player, Mark Schmidt, won all three of his sets, as did No. 4 player Carlos Yanez. Their final singles matches were called off once La Jolla had clinched the victory. Mike Mitchell and Jason Halquist won four doubles sets for the Vikings. David Rosenkranz, San Pasqual’s top singles player, won two of three sets.

Ramona 16, Bishop’s 12--No. 4-seeded Ramona swept the singles matches for 16 points and No. 5-seeded Bishop’s swept the doubles matches in the match at Kit Carson Park. Greg Failla, Doug Failla, Cliff Toomey and Grant Hughes were the Ramona singles winners responsible for the team victory.

St. Augustine 15 1/2, Mt. Carmel 12 1/2--The sixth-seeded Saints got the only upset of the day by edging the No. 3-seeded Sundevils. St. Augustine meets La Jolla in the other semifinal at 3 today at Morley Field.
