Southern Section Tennis : Mater Dei Advances to Semifinals

The Mater Dei High School boys’ tennis team defeated San Marino, 19 1/2-8 1/2, in a Southern Section 3-A quarterfinal match Tuesday at the Costa Mesa Tennis Club.

Ken Thome led the Monarchs, winning all four of his sets at No. 1 singles. And the Monarchs’ No. 1 doubles team of Andy Williams and Bryan Libby defeated Matt Maisel and Kyle Wong, 6-1, 6-4.

The victory sets up a Mater Dei-Calabasas semifinal at Calabasas on Thursday.

Mater Dei is 19-2. San Marino ended at 18-2.

In other 3-A playoff action:

Calabasas 22, Mission Viejo 6--The Coyotes ended the Diablos’ season by sweeping all of their doubles matches in a quarterfinal match at Mission Viejo. Gary Pearne was the lone bright spot for Mission Viejo, sweeping his singles matches. Mission Viejo ended the season at 16-7.

Los Alamitos 14 1/2, Dana Hills 13 1/2--The Griffins gained a quarterfinal win at Dana Hills. Troy Deutscher of Los Alamitos won his last match over Andy Taylor, 7-5, to secure the win. Los Alamitos played without Gary Rees, who was hospitalized with back problems but is expected to play Thursday when the Griffins play host to Los Altos. Los Alamitos is 23-0.

In 4-A action:

Palos Verdes 20 1/2, University 7 1/2--Palos Verdes took the match at Palos Verdes to advance to play Santa Barbara on Thursday. University ended its season at 21-2.
