Southern Section Baseball : Taub and Ocean View Stop No. 1 Mater Dei, 4-1

Senior Randy Taub allowed just two hits over the final six innings to lead Ocean View of Huntington Beach to a 4-1 upset of top-ranked Mater Dei of Santa Ana in the quarterfinals of the Southern Section 4-A division baseball playoffs Friday at Mater Dei.

Catcher Blaine DeBrower led off the game with a home run, and consecutive home runs by shortstop David Tinkle and Phil Chess in the fourth inning gave the Seahawks (21-7) the lead for good. Tinkle added an RBI single in the fifth inning.

Ocean View will face Sunset league rival Fountain Valley, a surprise 7-2 winner over No. 4 Long Beach Poly, in the semifinals Tuesday. Also in the 4-A, Camarillo pounded Paul Johnson for six first-inning runs in a 12-6 win over Redondo at Camarillo. The Scorpions will face St. John Bosco of Bellfower, which defeated Riverside Poly, 1-0, on a fifth-inning RBI single by Oscar Meza.

Russell Frederick’s RBI single in the seventh inning lifted Sunny Hills of Fullerton to a 6-5 upset victory over Gahr of Downey in 3-A action. Sunny Hills will meet Lompoc, a 3-0 winner over Santa Ana, in the semifinals. Also winning in the 3-A were West Covina Edgewood, 3-1, over Troy of Fullerton, and Oxnard Rio Mesa, 18-0, over Downey.

In the 2-A, Diamond Bar just got by Newport Harbor, 3-2, and will meet Riverside Norte Vista, a 4-0 winner over Quartz Hill. Mountain View gained the semifinals by beating Glenn of Norwalk , 3-1, and Mission Viejo slipped by Santa Clara, 1-0.
