Southern Section Softball : Osterman Keys Garden Grove

Junior Leslie Osterman struck out 12 and allowed only two hits Friday to lead Garden Grove High School to a 3-0 win over Sunny Hills in a Southern Section 3-A quarterfinal softball game at Sunny Hills.

Sunny Hills had scored 18 runs in their two playoff wins, but were frustrated by Osterman, who faced only two batters over the minimum.

Garden Grove (23-7), the Garden Grove League champion and third-seeded team in the 3-A division, scored all three of its runs in the fifth inning. Leslie Newman led off the inning with a single. The next two batters bunted with the intention of sacrificing, but also reached base when Sunny Hills was unsuccessful trying to get Newman, the lead runner.

Lynn Titzkowski then singled to score the Argonauts’ first run and Marian Mendoza later knocked in two runs with a single.

In other 3-A playoff action:

La Quinta 1, West Covina 0--Casey Tacason relieved Yvone Cloyd with a runner at third and none out in the bottom of the seventh and preserved the Aztecs win at West Covina.

La Quinta scored the only run of the game in the second inning. Stephanie Messner led off with a single, was sacrificed to second, went to third on a single by Greer Carter and scored on a bloop single by Sonja Lovejoy.

Katy Foranyic got three hits to lead La Quinta’s offense, and Cloyd got the win to improveher record to 10-1.

Woodbridge 2, Glendale 0--Junior Jenny Allard struck out nine and allowed two hits as the Warriors beat Glendale at Woodbridge.

Woodbridge (24-3), the Sea View League champion, scored twice in the bottom of the sixth on passed balls. Sandra Schoonover got on an error, was sacrificed to second base, reached third on a passed ball and scored on a passed ball. Later in the inning, Allard walked, was singled to third by Tiffany Boyd and scored on a passed ball.

In 2-A playoff action:

Mission Viejo 3, Chaminade 2--Mission Viejo took a 3-0 lead and held on to win at Chaminade.

Shereen Loth singled in the Diablos (16-6) first run in the third inning. In the fifth, Suzy Davis tripled and scored on a error and Loth knocked in Mission Viejo’s final run with a single.
