Cabrillo 2

Maranatha 0

Cabrillo of Lompoc showed why it was seeded No. 1 when it matched its talent against No. 2-seeded Maranatha of Sierra Madre.

In a pitching battle, it was Cabrillo’s Margart Harvey who ended up the winner against Maranatha’s Heidi Pringle as the Conquistadores defeated the Minutemen, 2-0, to take the 1-A Southern Section girls’ championship at Mayfair Park in Lakewood.

Pringle, meanwhile, was brilliant until the fourth inning, pitching a hitless game, with only one runner getting on base, on an error by shortstop Tania Nasir.

In the fourth inning, Cabrillo’s Barbara Futuro reached first on Pringle’s errant throw, went to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored what turned out to be the winning run on an RBI double by Shelly Gdovin. Right fielder Stacey Higdon then drove in Gdovin with a single to center field.

Meanwhile, Harvey--playing with a sore shoulder--allowed only two hits and gave up one walk through three scoreless innings and worked out of a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the sixth inning.
