Names in the News - June 6, 1985

Brad Bierley, Pepperdine senior center fielder, and Billy Bean, Loyola Marymount junior outfielder, were named to the District 8 team selected by coaches.

Second-team selections from Pepperdine are senior shortstop Nezi Balelo and junior pitcher Scott Marrett.

Bierley hit 27 home runs and batted in 75 runs to lead Coach Dave Gorrie’s Waves to the West Coast Athletic Conference championship and to the finals of the NCAA West I Regional playoffs. Pepperdine finished with a 52-15-1 record.

Bierley set Pepperdine career records for hits (231), runs scored (180), RBIs (173), home runs (35), games played (232) and triples (15). He also holds single-season school marks for hits (93), runs scored (69), RBIs (75), homers (27) and triples (8).

Five West Los Angeles College baseball players were named to the 1985 All-Mountain Valley Conference team selected by coaches.

Oilers selected are freshman infielder Lorenzo Lesky and four sophomores: first baseman DeJon Watson, infielder Tim Vaughn, outfielder Jim Vatcher and pitcher Lee Carballo. Vatcher and Carballo were unanimous choices.

Lesky batted .427 for Coach Art Harris’ WLAC team, which finished with a 27-12 overall record and in third place in the conference with a 12-8 mark. Watson hit .372, Vaughn .298 and Vatcher .375. Carballo had a 4-2 record and a 4.17 earned-run average.

Sophomore outfielder Victor Hithe, a .410 hitter, was a second-team selection for the Oilers, and honorable mention went to three other WLAC sophomores: infielders David Johnson and George Powell and outfielder Gayron Jackson.

Culver City High School pitcher David Dawson and Santa Monica High School catcher Kelly Mann were selected for the 18-man South team that will play in the California Baseball Coaches’ Assn.’s annual North-South High School All-Star Series.

Contests in the three-game series will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at noon Sunday at UC Riverside.

Following the series, an 18-man team will be named from both teams to face a prep all-star team from Oklahoma in a three-game series next weekend at Fresno State University.

Dawson and Culver City High second baseman Ken Kamba were selected to play in the South Bay Athletic Club’s All-Star Classic on June 14 at El Segundo Recreation Park.

Nina Revoyr, a member of the Culver City High School girls varsity basketball team the past two years, will play for the Southern California Women’s Basketball Clubs team of girls 16 and younger in the AAU National Women’s Basketball Tournament, June 29-July 6, at Fairfax, Va.

Revoyr’s team, based in Long Beach, won the Southern Regional AAU championship at a tournament in May at Artesia High School.
