Kari E. Christensen, who will be attending Pepperdine on a basketball scholarship in the fall, was named the women’s state CIF scholar-athlete of the year.

Christensen, 18, graduated from Pleasant Valley High School in Chico, where her grade-point average was 3.97 (on a scale of 4), and ranked eighth in a senior class of 209. She plans to be a pharmacist.

Last season the 5-10 guard averaged 18.3 points and 10 rebounds a game in leading Pleasant Valley to the state Division II championship and a 28-0 record. She was named the Northern California CIF player of the year and received honorable mention for All-American from USA Today.

Larry Jones, Hamilton High School guard and linebacker an All-Los Angeles City selection, has been named to the North squad for the 34th annual Shrine All-Star Football Classic. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. July 27 at East Los Angeles College’s Weingart Stadium.

Jones, who received a football scholarship to the University of Hawaii, is the second player in Hamilton’s history to be selected. The first was linebacker Marvin Jackson.

Dave Lertzman, Hamilton football coach, said that Jones, who also played varsity basketball and was a shot putter on the track team, was “a crushing blocker on offense and devastating tackler on defense.” He also kicked off.

Bud Kling, Palisades High School tennis coach, took first place among men in the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Progressive Doubles Tennis Tournament. Yvonne Green of Baldwin Hills Elementary School was the women’s champion in the format, in which players change partners in mixed doubles and keep individual records of wins and losses.

Among the women, Joyce Madison of Crenshaw High was second and Mary Matsuzaki of Palms Elementary was fourth. David Gordon of Dorsey High took fourth in the men’s competition.

The UCLA Jackie Robinson Scholarship Committee has awarded scholarships worth $24,000 to two incoming UCLA freshman. A four-year grant of $16,000 was given to Daron Campbell of Dorsey and another four-year scholarship of $8,000 was received by Carol Johnson of St. Bernard High School
