Claremont Names Baseball Coach

Pat Murphy, assistant baseball coach and academic services monitor at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton last year, has been named baseball coach at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Murphy, 27, replaces Mike Lord, who resigned. The Stags finished with a 19-20 record and were fifth in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Murphy, who was drafted by the San Diego Padres in 1983 and played in the San Francisco Giants farm system, has been a player-coach in Washington with the independent Tri-Cities Triplets of the Class A Pioneer League during the summer.

“We are happy to get somebody with the sports knowledge and experience that Pat has,” said John Zinda, athletic director at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. “He comes from an outstanding sports program at Florida Atlantic, a school only 5 years old but ranked high in NCAA baseball. You have to give Pat a lot of credit for Florida Atlantic’s success because he was heavily involved in its baseball recruiting.”

Murphy, who also will be an assistant football coach for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, has been baseball coach and assistant football coach at Maryville College in Tennessee. “We have quite a baseball tradition at CMS,” Zinda said. “I’m confident that Pat will continue that tradition.”

Many of the top amateurs in the nation will compete in the 24th annual Glendora Tennis Championships that start Saturday at Glendora High School, Citrus College and Dawson Park and Racquet Club.

Heading the list is former UCLA All-American John Davis, top seed in the men’s open division. Davis, a former member of the U. S. Junior Davis Cup team, made the NCAA All-American squad in 1982 and in 1983, when UCLA won the national title.

Other seeded players in the open division are Cal State Long Beach standout Peter Smith at No. 2, U. S. Olympic team member Eric Amend of Rolling Hills at No. 3, Craig Miller of Santa Ana at No. 4 and No. 5 Bruce Manson Hing of Glendale, who finished second last year.

The women’s open division is led by Pamela Jung of Hacienda Heights, who is seeded No. 1 ahead of defending champion Andrea Kriva of Agoura, and Linda Mallory and Stephanie Rhorer of Laguna Nigel.

Two San Gabriel Valley teams are among the top seeds in the open mixed doubles division. Jung and her brother Stuart are seeded No. 3, and Barry Friedman of La Verne and Julie Gillespie of Glendora are No. 4. The top-seeded teams are defending champions Bob Canfield and Rhorer and Dave Cronenbold and Kriva.

Stuart Jung, an All-CIF performer at Los Altos High, is seeded No. 5 in the junior boys 18-and-under division.

There are 741 entries in the tournament, including players from Canada, Mexico and Japan. The finals start at noon Aug. 11 at Glendora High.

About 300 competitors from 45 club teams in the United States, Europe and South America will participate in the American Vaulting Assn. National Championship and International Friendship meets Saturday through Tuesday at Kellogg Arabian Horse Center at Cal Poly Pomona.

Individual and team events are scheduled. Among the teams are Cal Poly Pomona, one of two colleges (along with Pepperdine) in the American Vaulting Assn., and the San Gabriel Valley Rainbow Vaulters. Admission is free.
