Cory Snyder, second baseman for the Waterbury Indians, was named Eastern League player of the week after batting .515 during his last eight games.

Snyder, 22, formerly of Canyon High and BYU, was the top draft choice of the Cleveland Indians in June, 1984, and was a member of the U.S. Olympic baseball team.

The rookie had 17 hits in 33 at-bats, including four home runs and two doubles. He also drove in 11 runs.

For the season, Snyder is batting .255, with 19 home runs and 66 RBI. He is tied for the Double-A league’s home run lead and is tied for third in RBI.

Roxanne Rafik, who pitched six no-hitters as a senior at Viewpoint High, has accepted a scholarship to Indiana University this fall.

Rafik will pursue a double major in sports medicine and French at Indiana. Earlier, Rafik had been considering offers from Northern Arizona, Colorado and Oregon State.

Rafik was 17-2 during her senior season with 10 shutouts. Viewpoint advanced to the semifinals of the Southern Section Small Schools playoffs.

Flori Prono of Granada Hills has qualified to play in the five-day United States Golf Assn. Women’s Amateur Championship at Pittsburgh, Pa., Prono, a junior at USC, has also qualified to play on the ladies’ satellite golf tour.

Pitcher Jeff Cirillo, who recently led the Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks Babe Ruth 14-15 year old team to the state tournament, was chosen the District 4 Tournament’s most valuable player. Cirillo, of Providence High, pitched in two of the team’s three victories on the way to the championship. He gave up only one run and six hits in 11 innings and had seven hits in 11 at-bats. Other VNSO members include: Bob Hughes, Luis Porres, Matt Roberts, Glen Rothstein and Peter Salehyar (junior high); Victor Salazar (Providence); Mike Rohrbough (St. Genevieve), Jeff Antoon, Greg Haptor, Bruce Heicke and Bob Kostenbader (Notre Dame); J.R. Smith and Jeff Light (Montclair Prep); Gary Nudell (Harvard).

Jeff Davis, former assistant sports information director at UCLA, has been appointed sports information director at Oberlin College.

Davis, 25, is a graduate of Cal State Northridge who earned a master’s degree in sports management at Ohio State.

Davis, a native of Cleveland, grew up in Woodland Hills and graduated from El Camino Real High in 1978. At ECR, Davis was an all-league basketball player and went on to play basketball at East Texas State.

Davis returned as an assistant basketball coach at ECR after a year at East Texas. After serving as an assistant coach at ECR for more than six years, Davis was named junior varsity head coach at the school in June.
