REPORTERS, COLUMNISTS TO EXAMINE THEIR JOBS
A full slate of sporting events, including local baseball, football, boxing and swimming, shares the TV spotlight this weekend with those who make their living reporting on such athletic endeavors.
Sports journalism is the topic of “The Great Communicators of Sports,” a special edition of NBC’s “SportsWorld” airing Sunday at 1:30 p.m. (Channels 36 and 39) and 3:30 p.m. (Channel 4). Among those reporters and columnists who will appear on the show are Jim Murray of The Times, Howard Cosell, Mel Allen, Jim McKay, Red Smith and Red Barber.
The 90-minute program will explore the evolution of the profession and report on how athletes feel about the people who cover them for radio, TV and the print medium, and on how some of the announcers and journalists become bigger stars than the athletes they’re covering.
