Doug Baker, a former Granada Hills High and Valley College shortstop, was recalled earlier this week by the Detroit Tigers from the organization’s Triple-A affiliate in Nashville, Tenn.

Baker, who was a member of the Tigers’ World Series championship team last season, batted .220 with two home runs and 29 runs batted in this season at Nashville.

They played three games, posted three shutouts and scored 10 goals.

But apparently that wasn’t good enough for the officials of the Cal Poly Pamona Labor Day Classic soccer tournament last weekend. None of tournament champion Cal State Northridge’s players were selected to the all-tournament team.

“We shut down the best players from Northern California, and not one of our defensive players made the team,” CSUN Coach Marwan Ass’ad said. “(Goalkeeper) Phil Heaver had three shutouts and didn’t make all-tournament. I don’t understand it.”

Super Vee driver Mike Groff of Northridge will try for his second win in two weeks at Sunday’s race at Sanair Super Speedway in St. Pie, Quebec, Canada.

Groff is tied for third with Davey Jones of McGraw, N.Y., in the Sports Car Club of America’s point standings after winning last Sunday’s Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course at Lexington, Ohio.

Mike Hooper of Woodland Hills finished ninth at Mid-Ohio, and Dave Kudrave of La Canada finished 10th. Hooper is 12th in the point standings, while Kudrave is 14th.
