The PCAA : Jones Gets Four Touchdowns as Las Vegas Wins, 35-7

Junior running back Kirk Jones scored four touchdowns to lead Nevada Las Vegas to a 35-7 victory over Tennessee Tech Saturday night at Las Vegas.

Jones, from Long Beach Poly High School, who gained 129 yards in 17 carries, scored twice on runs of one yard and also had a 37-yard run for a touchdown. He also caught a five-yard scoring pass from quarterback Steve Stallworth.

Eddie Hayward rushed for 150 yards on 33 carries and scored Tennessee Tech’s lone touchdown on a one-yard run in the second quarter.

Stallworth, a junior in his first start, completed 16 of 26 passes for 212 yards.

UNLV scored touchdowns on runs by Jones on its first three possessions and led, 21-7, at halftime.

Nevada Las Vegas rolled up 465 yards in total offense, while Tennessee Tech was able to gain only 271 yards.

San Jose 32, New Mexico State 3--Mike Meredith ran for two touchdowns to lead the Spartans past the Aggies in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. opener at San Jose.

The Spartans led, 16-0, early in the second quarter after Meredith scored his two touchdowns and Tony Brown kicked a 40-yard field goal.

In the closing seconds of the first half, Spartan defensive back K.C. Clark intercepted a Jim Miller pass and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown, giving San Jose a 22-3 lead at the half.

New Mexico’s only points came during the second quarter on Andy Wieler’s 40-yard field goal.

The Spartans took advantage of eight New Mexico State turnovers.

Pacific 49, Sacramento State 17--Fullback Tim Richardson rushed for 76 yards and three touchdowns, and the Tigers intercepted five passes to beat the Hornets at Stockton.

Pacific scored 21 points in the first quarter, including a 56-yard touchdown pass play from Greg Murphy to Kurt Heinrich.
