The Southland : Azusa Wins as Okoye Runs Wild

Junior tailback Christian Okoye, a world-class discus thrower, rushed for 206 yards and a school-record four touchdowns in leading Azusa Pacific to a 37-14 win over Whittier Saturday at Azusa Pacific.

Okoye also had a 90-yard touchdown run called back on a clipping penalty from the other side of the field.

Okoye scored on runs of 56, 65, 47 and 1 yards, all in the first half.

Azusa Pacific (1-0), an independent, is ranked 18th in the NAIA. Whittier, of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, is 0-1.

Cal Poly SLO 35, North Dakota St. 29--At San Luis Obispo, Cal Poly built an 35-7 lead and then held on to upset North Dakota State, ranked No. 1 in Division II.

Jim Gleed carried 29 times for 173 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Mustangs.

Joey Kolina went over the from one-yard line with 8:49 left in the third quarter to give Cal Poly its 35-7 lead.

Occidental 10, La Verne 3--Quarterback Pat Guthrie scored the game’s only touchdown on a two-yard run early in the fourth quarter as Occidental (1-0) won a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at La Verne.

Occidental drove 81 yards in 14 plays for the touchdown. On third and goal, Guthrie, who completed 14 of 25 passes for 106 yards, scored on a bootleg.

La Verne is 0-1.

Cal Lutheran 28, Sonoma State 7--Quarterback Tom Bonds threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead Cal Lutheran at Rohnert Park, Calif.

Bonds completed 7 of 20 passes for 144 yards, including a 50-yard touchdown to flanker Greg Harris in the third quarter.
