Two Mexican fieldworkers were killed and three injured when a speeding car struck pedestrians at a catering truck on El Camino Real in Encinitas, California Highway Patrol officials said. The CHP said the driver of a Corvette, Samuel Conant, 34, of Leucadia, will be charged with felony drunk driving and manslaughter. He was listed in fair condition at Sharp Memorial Hospital. Coroner’s deputies were seeking the identity of one of the men killed who was believed to be in his 20s; a second victim was tentatively identified as Lenardo Ramos Montez, 16, of Mexico. Two men believed to be in their 20s were taken to Palomar Hospital, where they were listed in critical condition. A fifth pedestrian, Roberto Rodriguez, 27, of Mexico, was listed in fair condition at Sharp Memorial Hospital. The CHP said Conant was driving south on El Camino Real about 7:45 a.m. when his car veered to the right and hit the pedestrians.
